Né en 1977 à Shanghai, en Chine,
Shen Wei est un artiste visuel basé à New York City. Il est reconnu pour ses portraits intimistes et pour la poésie de ses photographies de paysages et de natures mortes. Il travaille également la vidéo, la performance et l’art mixed-media.
Le travail de Shen Wei a été exposé internationalement, dans des lieux tels que le Musée de la Ville de New York, le Philadelphia Museum of Art, le Musée d’Art Modernede Moscou, le North Carolina Museum of Artet le Musée d’Art He Xiangning.
Son travail a été présenté dans des publications telles que The New Yorker, Aperture, ARTnews, American Photo, EXIT, Photo District Nouvelles, et le Wall Street Journal.

PHOTOGRAPHIES
Les photographies de Shen Wei fonctionnent par séries, chacune d’entre elles explorant en profondeur une des thématiques fétiches de l’artiste. On retrouve dans un premier temps un questionnement culturel qui concerne ses origines chinoises et sa volonté de se reconnecter avec ce qu’il appelle la Chine authentique, sans se soucier de ses dimensions économiques et politiques. On retrouve également dans son travail un fort attrait pour le fantasme, l’inconnu et la rêverie, mêlé à de nombreux autoportrait mettant en valeur son désir d’introspection et de connaissance de soi. La nudité, qui est parfois montrée sans concessions, n’est pas tellement une fin en soi destinée à exciter le plaisir des sens mais plutôt un moyen pour lui de célébrer la beauté dans son environnement naturel et d’exprimer son désir de transcendance.
La sexualité, la question de l’identité et l’attrait pour l’inconnu sont autant de points de réflexions que soulèvent les photographies de Shen Wei, abordant tout à la fois avec pudeur et dénuement la terrible complexité des émotions.

TRAVAIL SUR PAPIER
L’imagination, la mémoire et les rêveries sont les principales sources d’inspirations du travail de Shen Wei.
En combinant ses tirages photographiques avec des éléments de dessin minimalistes, ses œuvres sur papier révèlent son interprétation visuelle des formes d’énergies internes et externes qui gravitent ou cohabitent au sein des corps et des objets. Fasciné par la philosophie chinoise du “Qi“- qui repose sur la théorie d’un souffle vital invisible associé à une méthode de soin, l’artiste veut amener les spectateurs à rentrer dans un monde multidimensionnel à la fois poétique, surréaliste et séduisant.
Peut-être pourrait-il s’agir du chemin menant vers une nouvelle connaissance de soi. Il est exposé dans les plus grandes capitales.

VIDEO
Les œuvres vidéos expérimentales de Shen Wei se caractérisent par une absence de narration et une tendance accrue pour le minimalisme. Elles ont pour volonté de questionner la nature humaine au sens large, mais également les interrogations personnelles de l’artiste en ce qui concerne l’identité et la connaissance de soi. Ses travaux vidéos, destinés à être diffusés en boucle dans des espaces dédiés, offrent au spectateur la possibilité de rentrer dans l’intimité et la sensibilité de Shen Wei, qui célèbre à travers ceux-ci son attrait pour l’indicible, la rêverie et la beauté susceptible de nous transcender.

Born and raised in Shanghai, Shen Wei is an artist based in New York City.  His work has been exhibited internationally, with venues including the Museum of the City of New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, La Triennale di Milano, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the He Xiangning Art Museum. His work has been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, Aperture, ARTnews, American Photo, and Wall Street Journal.

Shen Wei’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Library of Congress, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Chinese in America, and the Ringling Museum of Art, among others.

Shen Wei is a recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Arts Residency, the Asian Cultural Council Arts & Religion Fellowship, the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Arts Grant.  He holds an MFA in photography, video, and related media from the School of Visual Arts, New York; and a BFA in photography from Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
